Musical Melodies - Ithaca Community Chorus and Chamber Singers

The Ithaca Community Chorus and Chamber Singers will be performing the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé has been re-scheduled to Saturday, February 16 19, 2019 at 7:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church.

In his seven-section Requiem, the French composer Gabriel Fauré distilled some of the most beautiful melodies he ever composed. As with much Western classical music, the Requiem owes its roots to Christian faith. Traditionally, it is a prayerful lament for the dead. Fauré’s Requiem is quite different, since he had no clear religious beliefs. Rather than the sombre nature of many requiems, Fauré’s is noted for its calm, serene and peaceful outlook.  There is musical solace in a work that focuses on the supposedly restful and fear-free nature of death.

In 1947, Maurice Duruflé was working on a suite of pieces for organ based on the Gregorian chants for the requiem mass, when he was commissioned by his publisher to write a large-scale work based on those texts. The resulting Requiem, originally for orchestra and chorus, is the culmination of Duruflé's style, mixing chant, quasi-Renaissance counterpoint, and sumptuous harmony derived from Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel.

We are able of offer heavily discounted tickets of $10 for those who register by January 14th.
